Happy St. Pattys Day!

Are you going ‘green’ this Saturday? Irish or not- using green / environmentally friendly products and practicing good maintenance habits for the longevity of your septic system is important! If even you don’t have a septic system, good housekeeping habits are better for the environment.

Your septic system contains living organisms that digest and treat waste. As a general rule of thumb, do not dispose of anything in your septic system that can just as easily be put in the trash. So, paper towels, wet wipes, facial tissues, tampons, cigarette butts, condoms, and kitty litter- just to name a few, are all no-nos.

More:
-Do NOT use antibacterial soaps and cleansers
-Limit the use of bleach-based cleansers and detergents, use peroxide bleach (non-chlorinated)
-Use non-chlorinated, biodegradable, & phosphate free dishwashing products
-Use only biodegradable, not anti-bacterial dishwashing detergent
-Do NOT flush unused medications.
-Avoid putting paints, varnishes, paint thinners down the drain – squeeze all excess paint and stain from brushes and rollers on several layers of newspaper before rinsing.
-Don’t use colored toilet paper- look for ‘septic-safe’ on the packaging.
-Don’t use septic tank additives- these may be harmful to your system.
